September Favourites

So as September draws to a close we thought we would reflect on this month and some of our favourite things:

  1. Bake Off is back! We are loving having GBBO and especially Mary back on our screens. Watching every Wednesday has really inspired us to bake some more. Especially as at work we have our very own bake off competition and some people are incredible to say the least. This month alone we have baked; lemon meringue pie, treacle tart, salted caramel tart, sultana and apple bites and oreo cupcakes.
  2. Body Coach – we are loving the body coach videos on youtube. These are a great way to workout when you don’t fancy being in a stuffy gym surrounded by people. You can do these at home in your bedroom, or front room or in the garden! The body coach is great and we cannot recommend his new book enough either!   3. Cath Kidston for Disney Range – if you haven’t seen this amazing range then where have you been?! Cath Kidston have teamed up with Disney to bring us the cutest ever Winnie the Pooh print ever. The range has nearly sold out online and it was only launched on Monday 26th September. The prints are limited edition so once they have gone they’re gone! We are loving the cute cushion, the apron, makeup bag and the bowl.
  4. Twinings Cherry Bakewell Green Tea– If you are not a ‘Green Tea’ fan you really should try the Cherry Bakewell flavour because it will change your mind. Lots of people don’t like the taste of green tea but these flavours really do compliment the flavour. Other flavours to try would be salted caramel and mango with lychee.
  5. EventBrite– We have been obsessed with Eventbrite recently it’s such a good website to find tickets for events all over the country. You can filter on the city, price, date, topic etc. We have attended two events recently that we found on Eventbrite ‘Bloggers Fest’ and the ‘Lorna Jane Active Nation Day’. Both events were amazing and we will definitely be going back for more.
  6. Pip & Nut squeeze packs– Of course we had to have a nut butter in our favourites, although not all of the Three Brits are a fan! We came across the Peanut butter squeeze sachet one day when shopping in Sainsbury’s. They are great to carry around with you as a snack on the go as you can literally squeeze it onto anything. We will be exploring more of the flavours next month!

Lorna Jane – Active Nation Day

We follow Lorna Jane on instagram and were very excited when we realised one of her active days was to be held in London. We snapped up the free tickets as soon as possible.

Not really knowing what to expect, on Sunday morning we headed by train to Shoreditch. We took the short walk to Shoreditch park, following other people in gym kit and arrived to lots of people all jumping and exercising to loud music.

We registered at the pink tent and took advantage of the free samples, those salted caramel aussie protein bars were amazing by the way! We found our spot and joined in with the workout.

The first was a jungle style workout that involved dance like moves which was a lot of fun! It definitely got us warned up ready for the day!

Next we enjoyed a really good pilates class, now we haven’t done pilates before so were a bit sceptical abut it, however it turned out to be amazing and we really worked our core muscles. We will definitely be trying them out in the gym and maybe finding a pilates class near home.

We then took part in the duo workout which is all workouts to be done with a partner. To be honest we weren’t really a fan of this session and felt that we could do all the workouts on our own but with a partner doing it together. Maybe these duo workouts  are not for us – well there are 3 of us after all!

The next workout was with Wildcat and this was body pump and it was soon good! We loved getting hot and sweaty and getting fully involved with this workout – squats, lunges, burpees, sit ups, press ups – you name it we attempted it!

By this point the sessions were over running slightly and we were feeling peckish, so we headed towards Shoreditch for a wander and some food before heading back home

We had such a fun morning and it was all completely free – we cannot wait until the next event!

The Body Coach

We were having one of those days were we really didn’t want to go to the gym. The sun was shining and we wanted to make the most of the summer sunshine (good job we did it started to thunder and lightning soon after our workout). We had never tried a Body Coach workout before so decided to give it a go.

The Body Coach has a Youtube channel where he uploads live videos once a week. The HIIT session we did was 20 minutes long and oh my gosh it is an absolute killer. When Joe Wicks says you are going to sweat he really does mean it.

In the session we completed there were 5 rounds of 4 exercises, you do 30 seconds of work then you rest for 30 seconds. The exercises in the workout were; High knees with straight punches, Press ups, Squat jumps (imagine you are shooting a basket ball) and finally a Burpee with four mountain climbers.

We will definitely be going back for more!

After the session we refueled our bodies with a PHD Chocolate Peanut flavour protein shake.

5 Benefits of HIIT

1. It only takes 20 minutes; you can complete a HIIT session in the morning before work or even in your lunch break.

2. You will burn more fat during the session and after the session is complete. You will burn more calories in the 24 hours after the HIIT session.

3. No equipment is necessary.

4. It’s free and you don’t need to spend money on a gym membership.

5. You will always be able to challenge yourself no matter how fit you are.

Cacao Bliss Balls

On Friday we had such a good gym session making sure we got the weekend started the right way (nice and sweaty). We did a full body work out incorporating both weights and HIIT training into our session.

There is just something about a Friday where our bodies or brain crave chocolate a lot more than usual. So this Friday we decided to opt for the healthier option of homemade Bliss Balls. They are so easy to make and you only need four ingredients.

Ingredients

12 dates

100g almonds (we used unblanched)

2 Tbsp Raw Cacao powder

1 Tsp vanilla

Method

Place all the ingredients in a food processor until they are Sticking together

Roll the mixture into balls using your hands

Place in the fridge or if you can’t wait like us eat them straight away.

We also decided to freeze some so we are prepared for our next sugary craving .

Spiced Apple and Sultana Cookies

OH my goodness these cookies taste AAAAHmazimg! They are so easy to make and it’s proof that you don’t need refined sugars to make cookies taste delicious. When 3 o’clock comes around and you need an energy boost these are the perfect treat.

Ingredients

4 ripe bananas

3 red apples

280g oats

2tbsp of honey

3 teaspoons cinnamon

125g sultanas/raisins

You can add all sorts of dried fruit and spices to the mixture.

Method

Preheat oven to 200C

Grate the apples into a large mixing bowl

Mash the banana into the mix

Add all the remaining ingredients into the bowl and stir

Line a baking tray with grease proof paper

Grab some of the mixture and flatten it (should look like a cookie)

Place in the oven for 30 minutes until the cookies are looking golden brown

Hitchen Lavender Farm

Now who would’ve thought visiting a field full of lavender could be such fun!?

We came across this farm by chance after seeing some friends visiting we googled lavender farm and found the beautiful farm in Hitchen and just had to go!

Hitchen is about an hours drive from us but it was well worth the trip, you arrive at this farm pretty much in the middle of no where to a car park heaving with cars. We overheard the carpark attendant telling a customer that when he took the job he didn’t ever think it would be this busy. I think this concept has really taken off.

You pay 4 pound fifty and get give a large brown paper bag, pick up (borrow) some scissors and the huge field is yours. You can spend as long as you want and fill your bag with lavender that you have cut yourself. It was soon therapeutic and lovely to walk through the delicious smelling lavender and of course take many instagram worthy pictures!

You can even get married here in a marquee looking out over the fields – imagine the photos!

There was also a cafe, however as it was such a sunny day the cafe was heaving. Instead we headed to the local village and went to the pub.

We cannot wait to return next year (the farm is now closed, season is over!), and I think I might have to treat my mum to a visit, she would love it!

Staying healthy at University 

Staying healthy at university can be extremely difficult, we graduated university nearly 3 years ago now (wow time really does fly) and have been through fresher’s week, the weight gain and the weight loss. We hope you find these tips useful when starting university to help you avoid making some of the mistakes we made.

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail
Before you start university make sure you go to IKEA, Dunelm Mill, Marks and Spencer or anywhere else that sells cheap kitchen utensils, pots and pans & Crockery.

If you don’t go to university with pots and pans then it is likely you will buy ready meals because you have nothing to cook your meals in

Research Recipes

Look at some recipes before you head off to university so you have an idea of the meals you are going to cook. There are hundreds of recipes online so you don’t even have to spend money buying a cook book. If you have a few stable meals in mind then it will be a lot easier when food shopping.

Be clever with your drink choices

Some Alcoholic drinks (well most) are extremely high in calories.

With it being fresher’s week it is likely you are going to be drinking almost every day consuming way more calories than you usually would.

Stick to something like vodka, soda and fresh lime this has barely any calories in and tastes delicious.

Home Cooked Meals

Home cooked meals are by far the cheapest and healthiest way to eat when at university. We would recommend cooking in bulk and freezing the leftovers. This way when you are really hungover and can’t be bothered to cook you will have a delicious home cooked meal waiting for you to put in the microwave. This will also help save you some money on the expensive unhealthy takeaways.

Walk

You will probably find you will do a lot of walking at university, especially if you don’t own a car. It is the cheapest form of transport (obviously) and can really help burn a few extra calories. Walking to and from University is a great form of exercise and the fresh air is a great way of getting rid of a hangover.

Keep Fit

Research local Gyms before you start university so you can get an idea of the price and add this into your budget. If you cannot afford a gym then why not join one of the sports clubs at university. Rach did Cheerleading at University and loved it! Not only is this a great way to keep fit you will also make some new friends who have similar interests to you.

If none of these take your fancy then just get outside and pound the pavements, running is free and a great way to keep fit.

Limit the amount of take away you eat

Try to limit the amount of take away’s you eat when at university. You will probably find when you are not out partying people will suggest having a ‘Pizza movie night’ or something. Don’t restrict yourself to much, have a take away with your flat every once in a while eating healthy doesn’t have to be antisocial.

 Plan your meals

You might find that going to the supermarket can become quite fun (yes we said it fun). Before University we never really did a weekly food shop, but when we joined university we realised it can be really enjoyable. We would suggest however, taking a shopping list with you so you have an idea of what sort of food you need to purchase.

OH and another tip is DON’T go food shopping when you are hungry!

Stay hydrated

When drinking alcohol the body can become extremely dehydrated. The body doesn’t want alcohol in our system and likes to ‘get rid’ during this process it also loses a lot of water. Make sure you are trying to drink the recommended two litres a day to keep your body hydrated especially after drinking copious amounts of alcohol.

Practice Cooking Pre starting University

If you have never cooked before make sure you practice cooking before you start university. Ask you Parents, Guardian or even a friend to help you cook some simple meals.

But most importantly just enjoy yourself, university should be some of the best years of your life. Don’t stress yourself out if you don’t always remain on plan! We are jealous your uni experiance is only just Beginning!
